FOG BOG CANADA LOG: 2 DEAD , 1 MISSING AS BOAT SINKS OFF FLEUR DE LYS NL!

'Unbearable grief': 2 dead, 1 missing, 1 rescued after boat sinks off Fleur de Lys Coast guard says multiple ships responding Two people are dead following the sinking of a commercial cod boat off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, according to the RCMP.

One person has been rescued and one is still missing, the force said Wednesday morning.

The bodies of the dead have been recovered, according to a spokesperson for the police.

The RCMP said local fishermen rescued one person from the shoreline and recovered two people who had died.

Emergency services staff assessed the survivor and determined the person did not require further medical attention.

Mark Gould, deputy superintendent of maritime search and rescue in Newfoundland and Labrador, said Wednesday afternoon the rescue and recoveries happened before the coast guard was notified.

"A vessel of opportunity came upon the incident and responded and rescued the one individual and recovered the two others," Gould said.

"At that point they called Labrador Coast Guard radio, which was the first indication that we had of a distress situation."

Gould said the search area includes rocky shoreline, which makes the situation difficult but aircraft have been able to search the shoreline effectively.

The search for the remaining missing crew member is ongoing, with support from local communities and from as far away as Deer Lake, Grand Falls-Windsor and Springdale.

Gould said sea conditions were favourable at the time of the sinking and have remained so during the search. He said the coast guard has been in touch with the next of kin throughout the search.
