FOG BLOG U.S. NEWS LOG: AS CREWS SEARCH THROUGH RUBBLE FOR SURVIVORS , DEATH TOLL CLIMBS TO 10:
Death toll rises to 10 as search for survivors continues...Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the death toll has risen to 10 after a condominium building collapsed last week in Surfside, Fla. She said one more body had been discovered Monday morning. There are still 151 people unaccounted for, though Levine Cava stressed that the numbers “are very fluid, and they will continue to change.”
Officials said the rescue operations would continue, as families wonder how long to hold on to hope. “Right now, our top priority is search and rescue and find the people,” Levine Cava said.......Police publicly identified four more people who died after the building collapsed: Luis Bermudez, 26; Christina Beatriz Elvira, 74; Leon Oliwkowicz, 80; and Anna Ortiz, 46.
President Biden believes there must be an investigation into the collapse, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. Biden spoke with the Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator and said what he heard was “excruciating.”
Nearly 370 first responders are assisting the search in what officials say is the state’s largest non-hurricane rescue mission.
One of the rescue workers fell 25 feet from a pile of debris, an illustration of how treacherous conditions remain on the site. The firefighter declined medical help and continued working, an official said.
Town officials brought on a new engineer to investigate the cause of the disaster.
