FOG BLOG RIDICULOG: SHOULD THE WORD 'INDIAN' BE REMOVED FROM THE TERM 'INDIAN SUMMER'??
THE TERM INDIAN SUMMER GOES BACK CENTURIES AND IT IS TRADITION IN NORTH AMERICA. USUALLY IT MEANS A PERIOD OF WARMING THAT USUALLY OCCURS ANYWAY AFTER A BIG COOL DOWN AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER OR IN OCTOBER AND HAPPENS AROUND HARVEST TIME. WITH THE RISE THOUGH OF BETTER RECOGNITION OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND HERE THE TRUTH AND RECONCILLIATION WE SHOULD HAVE WITH OUR INDIGENOUS FRIENDS, WE ARE MOVING AWAY IN OUR CULTURE FROM THE TERM 'INDIAN' TO DESCRIBE FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE. INDIAN SUMMER IS SLANG REFERRING TO THAT TIME WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS UP FOR 3 TO 5 DAYS IN LATE SEPT. OR OCTOBER AFTER AN EARLY SNOW OR FROST . SHOULD THE TERM BE ON THE SAME BAND WAGON AS OTHER CULTERAL TURN AROUNDS SUCH AS THE WASHINGTON RED SKINS BEING RENAMED AND OTHER REFERENCES TO INDIAN LIKE THAT. I DO NOT EVEN USE INDIAN IN MY LANGUAGE SO MAYBE WE SHOULD CHANGE THE TERM 'INDIAN' IN INDIAN SUMMER TO SOMETHING ELSE. MY SUGGESTION IS ........HARVEST SUMMER! .....WHAT DO YOU THINK??
