New Brunswick has pressed pause on clinics administering the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine for now but will continue to administer it to residents over age 55, citing a "rarity of serious side-effects." In a news release early Monday evening, Public Health said the provincial government made the decision following the National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommendation Monday that AstraZeneca not be used at this time for people under 55. "While we have seen no cause for concern, we are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution pending further guidance from Health Canada," said Dr. Jennifer Russell, the chief medical officer of health. In the release, Public Health noted the national committee made the recommendation "following concerns in Europe due to rare cases of people under 55 having blood clots up to 20 days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine."

"Of the 20 million doses of the vaccine administered in Europe, there have been 25 incidents of this happening, or about one in a million," Public Health said.
Planned clinics using the AstraZeneca vaccine have been postponed and will be rescheduled, and the vaccine will not be administered to those under 55.
According to New Brunswick's COVID-19 dashboard, 90,182 doses of vaccines — including the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines — have already been administered in New Brunswick as of Monday.
The province is set to receive 30,900 doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine from the U.S. later this week, with first responders and teachers receiving the vaccine at clinics that began last week.
