Runners across the province are lacing up their boots today for the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run.
Terry Fox first dipped his prosthetic leg in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s in April of 1980 to start his Marathon of Hope.
While the man’s run was cut short, it sparked an outpouring of support and started the yearly event which raises money for cancer research.
Kirk Leach, Director of Community Development with the Terry Fox Foundation in Newfoundland and Labrador, says it is important to keep the man’s legacy alive, noting that everyone’s lives have been touched by cancer in some way.
He says the push needs to continue to find a cure and find better treatment. He says some of that research is being done in this province.
Several runs are taking place across the province today. In St. John’s, registration kicks off at the Quidi Vidi Lake boathouse at 10 a.m., the run starts at 11.
