FOG BLOG CANADA LOG: OFF DUTY OFFICER KILLED AND ONE INJURED IN AVALANCHE IN B.C.
Off-duty Nelson police officer killed, another injured in B.C. avalanche
Const. Wade Tittemore, 43, was killed in the avalanche near Kaslo, and another officer, Const. Mathieu Nolet, was critically injured. NELSON — An off-duty police officer has died in an avalanche in southeastern B.C., less than a week after Avalanche Canada warned the snowpack across much of Western Canada was “weak,” “scary” and “spooky.” A post on the City of Nelson Facebook page on Monday said one of its officers, who it later identified as 43-year-old Const. Wade Tittemore, had been killed in an avalanche near Kaslo, and another officer, Const. Mathieu Nolet, was critically injured. The Nelson Police Board said the two were on snowmobiles about 70 kilometres north of the city when they were engulfed. Neither was working at the time.
The statement from the city says Tittemore had been with the force for four years and before that was with the Calgary Police Service for 11 years.
It says Tittemore was an avid backcountry enthusiast who loved skiing, hiking and backpacking and moved to Nelson with his wife and two sons.
Nelson Police Chief Donovan Fisher says Nolet has internal injuries and broken ribs.
