Crews shut off gas leak outside Michael Garron Hospital Toronto fire officials say hospital remained open and operating normally A gas leak at Michael Garron Hospital that prompted the evacuation of some nearby residences Tuesday morning has been shut off, emergency officials say.
During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Toronto Fire Deputy Chief Jim Jessop said the hospital remained open and operating normally after crews did not detect any gas readings inside.
Crews also monitored the air of the surrounding buildings and detected none, said Jessop.
"It's not common for a gas line that large to be severed but it certainly has happened before," he said.
According to Toronto Fire Services, construction workers may have hit a gas line near the entrance of the hospital's emergency department around 9:30 a.m.
Hospital spokesperson Regan Lalonde said in an e-mail to CBC News that some patient care might be delayed as crews worked to fix the issue.
