Elderly woman killed in suspected unprovoked attack in downtown Toronto A man was taken into custody soon after and charges are pending An elderly woman was killed Friday morning in what is believed to have been an unprovoked attack along a busy stretch of Yonge St. Toronto Police say officers responded to reports of a “male assaulting a female” at about 11:40 a.m. on Yonge north of King St. E. Duty Insp. Craig Young told reporters at the scene the woman, believed to be in her 70s or 80s, was pushed to the ground while “simply walking along the sidewalk” and suffered serious injuries to her face and head.
“Emergency services responded and rendered life-saving measures, but unfortunately the female died at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained,” he said. “This is a tragic occurrence — one in a series of tragic occurrences in our city.”
The assault was reportedly “unprovoked,” Young added.
