UPDATE!! ON THE NEWS THEY SAID THE 'JELLYBEAN HOUSES DATE TO BEFORE THE SAINT JOHN GREAT FIRE! ALSO THIS IS A FAMILIAR PHRASE.....FELL INTO DISREPAIR IN RECENT YEARS....MORE HAS TO BE DONE TO PRESERVE HERITAGE IN THIS A HERITAGE CITY!!!!!This Ridiculog concerns our heritage properties. Recently on the news they had a story on the so called 'Jellybean houses'. These are 3 houses that are tightly packed side by side on Wellington Row in uptown Saint John. They are named as such due to their colourful exteriors. There was a person or persons that recently wanted to buy these homes and renovate them to rent them out and protect their heritage standing. This fell through and now they are poised to be razed by the end of winter and mixed housing units will be built in their place. This is a shame, many times these heritage places become run down and left to be torn down or burn down! Its a shame more couldn't be done when these individuals go to get funding etc. With more and more of these charming older places coming down , we will , in the future be faced with so few heritage places. We are trying to be a progressive city in these times of change but Saint John is a heritage city and we must protect this heritage here. In the U.S. they do so much more in many areas especially in New England to protect their heritage. We don't want in the future to have to revisit this on the Ridiculog!
